Directivity MetaData Plug-in

Directivity user interface

Per default, all audio sources are omnidirectional, meaning that they sound the same from all directions. Real audio sources however are not omnidirectional, but rather emit more sound energy in certain directions than in others. The Directivity metadata plug-in can be used to simulate this effect by defining a cone-shaped directivity pattern. The renderer will evaluate the directivity pattern for each ear separately, which can lead to a more realistic parallax effect especially for close sources.

The following parameters can be adjusted:

  • Inner Angle: the angle in degrees where the directivity pattern starts to take effect
  • Outer Angle: the angle in degrees where the directivity pattern reaches its maximum
  • Outer Gain: the gain applied to off-axis directions (linear)
  • Outer Lowpass: intensity (0-1) of a low-pass effect applied to off-axis directions

There is also a range of presets for common use cases.

The fallback settings in the Object Renderer are hardcoded to an omnidirectional source.

⚠️

The directivity pattern is only applied if the audio objects Listener Relative Routing is set to Position + Orientation.
